Review: Gone by Lisa McMann
I just finish Gone, which is the last of the Wake series by Lisa McMann.
I’ll try to review it without telling any spoilers of the book, but I may spoils the first 2 books. If you haven’t read the first two books, you shouldn’t be reading this anyway.
The second book ended with the news about what will happen of Janie if she continue using her ability. So her choice was to continue using her ability then lose her hands and sight after her thirties or to isolate herself from the wold while being healthy, but alone. I thought, why not just moderate? Find another job, continue seeing people on the day, but sleep by herself in her room ? A black and white choice is more dramatic I guess.
Compared to the first books, this one don’t have much actions and excitement, it’s Janie’s emotional journey between her love life, family problems, health issues, and tough decisions. Janie is very vulnerable in this book and is very lonely. Cabel, who was very supportive and understanding in the first books, seems to forget about Janie’s problems. At least, he was still sweet and loved her, otherwise, Janie’s decision wouldn’t be so hard.
I wasn’t disappointed when I finish the book because I was happy with the last two chapters, but I was bored while reading the others. Yes, we learned some new things, but some things caught my attention, but were not elaborated while some others were taking so long that you just want to get over it. The story was still well written, but I was disappointed to some untold details. The book was too short.
I don’t know if it’s a bad thing, but it’s hard to tell which genre the series fit. The first book is a paranormal mystery romance while the second a detective thriller, and the last is a young adult social issues novel.
Overall, I liked Gone, I specially like the conclusion because it’s the best conclusion it could possible be for Janie. I would have liked it better if it was less dramatic and would have stick to the first book genre. It is a good and original story, but I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone, more the to older young adults.
